Butterfish / Pompano
Scientific name
Trachinotus spp.
English name
Pompano
Description
Pompano, also known as Florida Pompano, groups together several species of the genus Trachinotus, pelagic coastal fish recognized for their elegant compressed silhouette and agile swimming in warm, tropical waters.
It mainly inhabits coastal areas, sandy beaches, estuaries, and areas near reefs, where it usually moves in small groups or schools. Its high and laterally compressed body, along with its bright silvery coloration, allows it to move quickly and efficiently both in open sea and in shallow waters.
It is an opportunistic predator that feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks, and fish, playing an important role in the trophic dynamics of coastal ecosystems. Its presence is often associated with sandy bottoms and surf zones, where it easily finds food.
Furthermore, it is a valued species in artisanal fishing due to its availability in accessible areas and the quality of its meat, which makes it a relevant resource in many coastal communities.
